Tour of Mt Blanc Food tips

•  Decide on a budget & try to stick to it.

•  Budget for some holiday treats i.e. ice-cream, cakes, dinner out.

•  Allow 10 ? 15 euros & don't budget to eat out more than twice, i.e. on your two rest days.

•  Cook with at least one other person to make it cheaper.

•  In the supermarket buy for several days at a time.

•  Plan your meals before you go shopping.

•  Remember ? recommended GOA = 2000 ? 2500 kcals. You are walking up hills/mountains for 5-6 hours daily and need more than this! Miss a meal and the consequences take their toll quickly!

•  Try and buy in-country brands rather than looking for English versions. It will be cheaper!

Evening meal ideas

Spaghetti. For one person, depending on appetite, you will need a bunch of spaghetti approx the diameter of a 50p piece. Boli sufficient water in a pan to cover the spaghetti whilst cooking ? approx half a pan full. Once the water is boiling, lower the spaghetti into the water. Once the submerged parts have softened slightly, push the rest in. Take care not to put your fingers in the water. Simmer for 8-10 mins. Test one piece to see if it is cooked. Pasta should not be cooked until it is soggy and sticky. Drain the water off and add one teaspoon of butter or olive oil. Mixing this in will stop the spaghetti sticking together.

Most other pastas. Again, boil enough water to cover the pasta. Once the water is boiling, add the pasta. One mug of dried pasta is plenty for one person with a healthy appetite. Simmer for the appropriate time, drain and add butter or olive oil to prevent the pasta sticking.

Rice for one person =? mug rice + 1 mug water. Bring the water to the boil, add the rice and stir, bring back to the boil. Once boiling, turn the heat down to very low so that the rice simmers gently. Do not stir whilst rice is cooking or you will make it sticky. The rice should be cooked once the water has disappeared. If the rice is cooked before you have finished cooking the rest of the meal, just leave the pan off the heat with the lid on, and it will keep warm for some time.

Basic omelette for one person. Put 2 or 3 eggs in a mug, and beat well with a fork. Add 2 tablespoons of water. Melt about a spoon of butter in a bowl. Once it begins to bubble, pour the egg mixture into the bowl. As it sets on the bottom of the pan, gently move the set egg around and allow the runny egg to take its place. Do this with sweeping movements, don't stir or you will get scrambled eggs. Whilst there is still a little runny egg on the top, add whatever filling you want, top with cheese. Suggested fillings: cheese, tomato, mushrooms, fired onions.

Pancakes

½ cup flour
1 egg
Half pint milk/water
pinch of salt
Add egg to flour and beat together, slowly mix in fluid and beat until smooth.
Cook like an omelette.
Can add bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, bananas - whatever you fancy. Very Yummy!!

If you have any good suggestions to add to the list of menu ideas, please send them to me so I can include them.
